About Serving A Mission
The Lord has called upon every worthy young man to serve him. Typically young men serve when they turn 19 yrs. old for a period of two years. Young women can also serve for 18 months, typically when they turn 21 yrs. old. We pay our own way for everything - it is completely a voluntary service.
The young men who serve all carry the title of "Elder" which means "One called of His Holy Order" or signifies someone who is called to serve the Lord full time as His duly authorized representative.
A "mission" is a geographic area overseen by a mission president and his wife. The mission is then divided into "zones" which are overseen by two missionaries called (what else?) Zone Leaders. The zones are further divided into "districts" overseen by two missionaries called District Leaders. Each District is made up of 3 - 5 companionships.
We always have a companion with us 24 / 7. Our typical day is up at 6:30 am and to bed by 10:30 pm. Most of the day is spent finding and teaching people about the restored gospel. We live in apartments (usually) or in members' homes.
Every Monday in our mission until mid afternoon is what is called "P-Day" or Preparation day. This is the time we do our shopping, do our laundry, write letters, clean our apartment, go sightseeing, etc. While on the mission we do not call home except on Mothers Day and Christmas. We do not watch TV or go on the internet or read newspapers.
The whole idea is to stay focused on the work and, believe me, we have no time to do any of that anyways. If you write to me I would love that and will do my best to respond. Please be patient as most often I have little time for letter writing. Also, please keep the letters clean and uplifting (appreciate that!). I love you all!!!
